The Red Centre - Northern Territory
Jump down to find what to do and where to stay in The Red Centre
Spiritual heritage and Aboriginal cultures complete the unforgettable red desert landscapes that glow in the setting sun. This is the real Outback that holds a wealth of attractions.
This is the home of Uluru (Ayers Rock), the famous monolith that everyone has seen a hundred times on postcards – for many, the most impressive symbol of Australia. For a truly Australian adventure, explore the bush on a camel, fly over the red desert, view Aboriginal rock paintings up close and trek into plunging gorges.
There are many major attractions within the Red Centre, but it is Uluru that unfailingly draws people here. It’s impossible to appreciate the sheer size and beauty of the world’s largest monolith without walking right up to it (and around it). The best way to learn more about its significance and history is with an Aboriginal guide. This really is an unmissable attraction.
Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) is Uluru’s taller sister. Named ‘many heads’ by the Aborigines, these 36 individual domes are 200m taller than Uluru at the highest point. Spiritually, they are equally significant.
Kings Canyon is set within the Watarrka National Park and features ancient sandstone walls more than 100m high, formed by the elements, rising up to a plateau of rocky domes. The walls contain the fossilised tracks of ancient marine creatures and ripplemarks of an ancient sea. Venture to the bottom and see the water-hole in the Garden of Eden, a place of great beauty with a bewildering array of fauna and flora.
It’s not all about the landscapes – the town of Alice Springs is also found in the Red centre. Although reasonably small, the town has a number of attractions in its centre and the conveniences of a modern city. It’s grown from a remote outpost to the second biggest town in the territory and there are plenty of things to do in and around Alice Springs, including camel riding, horse riding and hot-air ballooning.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service Base is located in Alice Springs and features a full aero-medical service, a preventative health services programme, a communications base and a museum and tourist facility that attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year.
The Alice Springs School of the Air provides an educational service broadcast to children in an area that covers approximately one million square kilometres. The Visitor Centre will enable you to get a unique view of the lessons, its history, how it operates and the lifestyle of the students.
