At the top of the Northern Territory, a gorgeous coast lines a maze of beautiful untouched landscape. The city of Darwin sits amid it all, offering a relaxed outdoor lifestyle and benefits of a warm climate year round. Perched on a peninsula with sea on three sides, Darwin is a great place to begin exploring the natural beauty of the surrounding national parks and islands.
Darwin’s harbour is twice the size of Sydney’s, with sunken ships from World War II, pearl farms and a prestigious marina to explore. Darwin is also known for its beautiful beaches. Other attractions include interesting museums and the Charles Darwin National Park, the crocodile farm and the marine life of Aquascene. For the shopaholic, the markets in Darwin are a dream. Litchfield is an easy journey from Darwin. This 1500 square kilometre national park is filled with typical Top End habitats: lush monsoon forests, termite mounds, unusual rock formations, waterfalls and cascades.
To explore landscapes of dense rainforest, sandy beaches and rock pools, head for the Tiwi Islands: Melville and Bathurst. Many locals produce distinctive and valuable art, pottery, sculptures and wooden carvings.
Kakadu is the place to visit Australia’s ancient wilderness and its mammals, reptiles, birds and insects. Crocodiles patrol waterways throughout the park.
