Shopping in Adelaide is simple and easy. Rundle Mall is Adelaide’s largest shopping precinct, with more than 500 retail outlets. You’ll also be at the heart of arts here, from fringe festivals and events to gallery exhibitions and Aboriginal artefacts. The Art Gallery of South Australia houses one of the best Australian colonial art collections in the world, in one of Adelaide’s most beautiful buildings. If Aboriginal culture is your thing, the South Australian Museum has the world’s largest collection of indigenous artefacts and an award-winning exhibition. For contemporary Aboriginal culture visit Tandanya, the National Aboriginal Cultural Institute.
Port Adelaide is a busy port where visitors can take in the past, displayed at the many museums and galleries in the area. A river cruise is a nice way to reach the port with its busy and historic maritime setting.
The Adelaide Hills are perfect for nature walks and scenic drives where you can discover boutique wineries, native wildlife at the Warrawong sanctuary or the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden. Glenelg is historically important and you can still see the Old Gum Tree where the colony’s first government was proclaimed in the 1800s. This pretty suburb has great sandy beaches and can be reached by the historical tram. At the Town Hall, the Bay Discovery Centre tracks the history of Holdfast Bay, while the Rodney Fox Shark Experience imparts the mysteries of the Great White.
The city is renowned for its fine dining and sumptuous local wines, so a visit to Adelaide wouldn’t be complete without experiencing it. You’ll find entire streets devoted to dining. The inner city offers alfresco options, great seafood and Asian cafes and restaurants, while along the coast there is a wide range of restaurants and cafes for holiday picnics and long lunches.
