Jump down to find what to do and where to stay in Cradle Mountain and Tasmania's North West
To the west of Tasmania you’ll find a land of dramatic mountains, crater lakes and abundant wildlife. Cradle Mountain boasts spectacular scenery and the famous Cradle Mountain Huts walk. The coastal fishing village of Strahan provides access to Gordon River and the surrounding wilderness.
Cradle Mountain is located in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, which is recognised as a wilderness area of outstanding world value. It is one of the last few remaining temperate wilderness areas in the world and is a rugged mountainous region. Extensively glaciated landscapes and pristine catchments are home to a profusion of threatened rare and endemic plants, a complex mosaic of vegetation and a collection of Tasmanian Devils, quolls, platypus and echidna.
On the Gorden River you can glide past waterfalls and the magnificent mirrored reflections before stepping ashore at Heritage Landing. Here you can walk into the green silence of the rainforest to see trees two thousand years old. Where the harbour opens to the ocean you’ll find the notorious Sarah Island, once known as Hells gate...
