Hobart, Tasmania
Jump down to find what to do and where to stay in Hobart
Compact but utterly beguiling, Hobart sits in the sheltering arms of the giant Mount Wellington. In its heyday, Hobart’s whalers and ship builders enjoyed a thriving trade from the handsome Georgian warehouses that decorate the harbour.
Today, the harbour fills with yachts for the Royal Hobart Regatta, and the warehouses at Salamanca Place house boutiques, cafes and galleries. Enjoying a Saturday morning breakfast in the bustling open air market is an uncommon treat.
Hobart also makes an excellent base for a visit to Port Arthur. The settlement of Port Arthur was created to put fear and hatred into the minds of those unfortunate enough to be sent there. You will be escorted around the ruins of the settlement hearing tales of the hardships suffered by the convicts.
Not far south and a scenic drive from Hobart is Bruny Island. Breathe in the cleanest air in the world and be surrounded by Australia’s highest, unique cliffs. Take a boat trip and you can view beautiful remote bays, drift within metres of the mysterious breathing rock, the massive secret caves and sculptured rocky islands that fringe South Bruny’s National Park. When you return to shore you will take unique memories of being one of the privileged few to have experienced nature at its unspoilt best.
