Western Australia - Coral Coast.
Jump down to find what to do and where to stay on the Coral Coast
The Coral Coast begins at the Pinnacles, about a 3 hour drive north of Perth and ends at Exmouth, about 12 hours or over 1000kms further along! The climate is warm year round, with the peak season being winter in the north and summer in the south. It does get very hot in Exmouth in summer!
There is a new road, almost complete, linking Perth with the Pinnacles along the coast, this will shave half an hour off the journey time, making the Pinnacles an easier day trip from Perth. The Pinnacles are limestone pillars in a very small sandy desert area - they look somewhat unworldly and there is still debate as to how they were formed.
Heading north you come to the pleasant sea-side towns of Cervantes and Jurien Bay, the latter being home to a colony of friendly sea lions.
Further along the western coast, is the World Heritage site of Shark Bay, a protected ecological habitat of over two million hectares. Only fourteen sites meet World Heritage criteria, and this is one of them.
Enjoy watching the dolphins in the shallows at Monkey Mia, or the marine playground at Coral Bay, where the relatively untouched Ningaloo Reef offers all the wonders of a reef system but with the benefit of being located just offshore. The Cape Range National Park is also a must do.
