Jump down to find what to do and where to stay in Perth

The modern city of Perth, filled with culture and cuisine, is only a step away from wine cellars, tropical beaches and leafy suburbs. This vibrant city has something for everyone.

As its capital, Perth provides the gateway to the state of Western Australia and its easy-going lifestyle; visitors can relax on the stunning beaches one day and experience a thrilling Outback adventure the next. Perth is an ideal introduction to the unrivalled variety on offer in this fascinating state and a superb foundation from which to immerse yourself into the Australian way of life.

One of Perth’s most attractive natural aspects is the Swan River: sweeping through the city towards the sea at Fremantle it remains a focal point for living the true Western Australian lifestyle. Edged with lush playing fields and a stunning backdrop of the city skyline, the riverside provides a perfect setting for a fantastic dining experience.

Perth is renowned worldwide for its delicious fresh seafood and the many restaurants that are situated along the water. Sample a range of speciality dishes including barramundi, tiger prawns and marron (freshwater crayfish). You’ll find mouth-watering steaks in many places, and Japanese cuisine is also popular, while traditional Asian teahouses offer a cheap and delicious option. Almost all restaurants are BYO (bring your own bottle), and with the state’s oldest winegrowing region close by you’ll be sure to find a good bottle to accompany your meal.

The Swan Valley vineyards are just northeast of Perth; this peaceful area offers everything from wine-tasting tours to art galleries. Sample the local wines and boutique beers, take picturesque walks or go horse riding on the hillside. Perth offers a shopping extravaganza, with local designs and value for money. In the heart of the city, Central Perth is the main shopping district; you can also head to Subiaco, Claremont, Leederville, Cottesloe and Fremantle for their lovely boutiques, galleries and cafes lining the leafy main streets. The ultra chic King Street is the centre of Perth’s sophisticated West End. In the suburbs, shopping centres offer a wide variety of stores, late-night opening and shopping seven days a week.

Alternatively, step into the fascinating Western Australian Museum, a key to the state’s natural and cultural aboriginal heritage.

Directly off the Perth coast is Rottnest Island, a popular day-tripping hotspot where divers can explore the colourful blankets of coral reef and eerie shipwrecks. For the less experienced, the shallower waters are great for snorkelling.
