About Australian Capital Territory

ACT is home to Canberra, which is Australia's capital city.

About half of the ACT is classified as National Park - thus its nickname the “Bush Capital.” Designed in 1912, it is a young, purpose built capital - built to settle a dispute between Sydney and Melbourne as to which should house the nations parliament upon forming the Federation.

As well as Parliament House, some of Australia's most important buildings are housed in Canberra - these include the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery of Australia and the recently created National Museum of Australia.

The city centre, as one would expect from a modern, planned urban hub, offers numerous options for eating and shopping. You'll find Australia, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Turkish, Spanish, Malaysian, French, Thai, Italian, Chinese restaurants - and more!

There's lots to see and do within easy reach of Canberra (though most of these fall within the surrounding state of New South Wales.) There are many wineries within a half hour drive, plus a bit further and you'll hit pristine white sand beaches or some colder white stuff in the Snowy Mountains.
