About Queensland
From the great heights of Queensland’s mountains to the shores of its sparkling seas, every inch of this region is filled with beauty.
From the sun-kissed beaches and spectacular islands of the Great Barrier Reef to the leafy rainforests and the rugged terrain of the outback, Queensland offers a glorious palette of vibrant contrasts. Its ever-changing landscapes are a world of excitement yet a haven of relaxation, and wherever you go, you are never far from nature.
On the coast of Southern Queensland, Brisbane, the state’s capital, is an energetic and dynamic city – ideal for a touch of culture, sightseeing and shopping during the day, and for dining out and entertainment in the evening. Just south of here is the glamorous Gold Coast, a haven for surfers and sun worshippers that’s famous for its infinite stretch of flawless beaches.
For World Heritage listed beauty, head to Fraser Island, where strikingly coloured sand cliffs overlook long, white-sand beaches, crystal-clear creeks flow through ancient rainforest and more than 100 freshwater lakes occupy the interior.
If adventure is what you’re longing for, head to the city of Cairns, a fantastic base for exploring the Tropical North and the primary gateway to two World Heritage landmarks, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. Cairns also offers a good range of shops, bars, restaurants and nightlife, making it a pleasing city to stay in.
One of the world’s greatest natural wonders, the Great Barrier Reef is an underwater Mecca for divers and snorkellers across the globe. This beautiful spectrum of colour and aquatic wildlife is composed of about 3000 individual reefs and 900 islands, stretching for 2600 kilometres.
Right in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef lie the Whitsundays. This archipelago of 74 islands is encompassed in clear, warm, inviting waters. Visit the white sands of Whitehaven Beach, the pretty town of Airlie Beach and, of course, all the amazing diving sites.
The lush Daintree Rainforest is one of the most popular and diverse places to visit, with a myriad of different and unique species. Trek under the emerald canopies, follow the Dubuji Rainforest Boardwalk or try one of the extreme sports organised in the area. Diving and snorkelling are the most common activities, but watersports, boat trips, sailing and fishing are all available too. The charming village atmosphere of Port Douglas is another great base for exploring the wonders of the Reef, the Daintree and Cape Tribulation. The golden sands of Four Mile Beach are a wonderful place to relax, while the golf course, marina and selection of boutiques will keep you entertained. If that isn’t enough adventure then head inland by four-wheel drive or, for a wider view, go up in a hot-air balloon.
