About South Australia

From the coast to the Outback, you won’t have to venture far to uncover the amazing wildlife and stunning landscapes that this region has to offer.

A state of many contrasts and surprises, South Australia is home to the beautiful and charming city of Adelaide, the Adelaide hills and picturesque countryside featuring rural villages, orchards and farmlands. Venture into the untamed wilderness to engage in unlimited adventure on the Murray River, the surrounding bushlands and on Kangaroo Island, or see a whole range of scenery from the rails on the Ghan train journey.

Famous for its wines, the south of Australia is known for its rich culture, incredible wildlife and vibrant city. Renowned for its entertainment, Adelaide’s pretty suburbs and laid-back lifestyle hold plenty of attraction, and it’s a food-lover’s paradise with over 700 restaurants. It’s also home to more than 800 shops, beach districts, museums and galleries.

Outside the city are the striking Adelaide Hills that have understandably inspired so many artists. The hills, with their craft shops and roadside stalls packed with freshly picked fruit, seem a million miles away from the busy capital of South Australia.

Kangaroo Island is just what its name suggests – and more. Seven times the size of Singapore, this flora-rich island is full of wildlife, notably kangaroos, koalas, platypus, seals and possums. If you’ve packed your sense of adventure, head to The Flinders Ranges and Outback. This is the place for four-wheel-drives, trekking and hiking, on land unchanged since its formation. One of the best ways to explore here is to ask the locals, who are only too pleased to help you enjoy the majestic lands.

Authentic Australia is found in the plains of Clare Valley. Burra and Kapunda are welcoming heritage towns where workers display skills passed down from generation to generation. The valley is also the place where some of Australia’s finest wine is made. Barossa Valley, too, is renowned for this and is a relaxing region where a walk through its pretty landscape can be rounded off in a charming restaurant or cosy café.

Beach lovers will adore the Eyre Peninsula, especially those looking for total seclusion – it’s home to miles of coastline. Past the beautiful shores are national parks, caves and the Nullarbor Plain, which is full of stunning natural features. Divers, surfers, fishing fans and animal enthusiasts will also be at home in Fleurieu Peninsula, an excellent place for whale spotting. Yorke Peninsula is rightfully popular for those looking for a great beach resort and Riverland is the growing-place of citrus and stone fruits, located on the banks of the majestic Murray River, whose banks are also home to the area known as Murraylands. Formed millions of years ago, the Limestone Coast is also well worth seeing.
