Australia is a vast and dispersed country. To see all of the highlights takes some traveling! You'd be as well to make the journey part of the fun. Getting around under your own steam has the added advantage that you can go when and where you want and it is often those unplanned stop-offs that prove to me the most memorable.

When we say vast - we are talking days not hours - so taking your home with you makes a lot of sense. Add in the generally fantastic climate and it goes a long way to explaining why camping is some-thing of a national obsession.

There are many ways to go about it, from taking a swag, to packing a tent, to camper-trailer, camper van and up to caravans and Winnebago's. All share the same sites and more or less the same freedoms.

So whether you're just out of school and backpacking around, a family with young kids looking for some family fun or a retired couple doing the big lap - or anywhere in between, camping is a definite top option when considering how to get around Australia.
