The most convenient way to get around Australia - if you have the time - is to drive.

The road network is modern and excellent along the coasts and between major population centres.

Driving is relatively safe - although the long distances do take their toll - driver fatigue being a major cause of accidents. It is also wise not to drive at night outside of urban areas, this is due to the local wildlife, particularly the kangaroos that tend to be most active at dusk and dawn. Hit a roo and you will know about it.

Driving is mainly carried out on the left hand side of the road, except around international airports where anything goes (joke!) Get a decent GPS and you won't get lost. You can even get GPS with Australian accents nowadays, which is a bonus.

One thing to avoid when drinking is driving, as the local police are very hot on this - this is particulary true when you are most likely to want to drink - holiday week-ends with the family! Double de-merit points apply - for none-Australians getting twice the demerit points isn't good, so avoid them by getting the wife to drive.

As for choice of car, get the biggest that your budget will allow. Distances are long so you'll want something comfortable that isn't going to stop...Obviously if you can get a car that is fuel effecient, so much the better, but if you are heading off-road get a 4 wheel drive as the going can get tough particularly after some rain.
