"Caves" is one of the most iconic buildings in the SW corner of Australia - with a history going back around 100 years...
The house itself actually reminds me of my old place in rural Sussex - only some-what more grandiose...
We were there on Sunday - actually we've been there two out of the last three Sundays. The bar food is good, fish and chips is the signature plate and it is very, very good. Would also recommend the Yallingup bread as a starter - lovely wood fired bread made locally, all good stuff and tastes delicious. (You can get the bread loaves in the local Yallingup store or in the grocers by the tourist office in Dunsborough - it is good bread!) We are yet to try the more formal restaurant.
"Caves" is blessed with a lovely setting. You can walk up from the beach, via the ghost trial, which is a very scenic walk with fantastic local fauna on either side. It takes about 5-10 minutes to arrive in the gardens of the house, which are really nice - think English country house meets with the more exotic local vegetation. The kids love it also, as it offers loads of opportunities for den building...so Mum and Dad can enjoy a drink, whilst the kids are off playing - works for me.
I think that is what makes Caves House works actually; it's like being in a little bit of the English country side, except with better weather, the ocean a relaxed walk away and none of the stuffiness that you'll get if it was "dropped" back in the UK.
The reason that many people go there (and there is a real mix of people) is that on a Sunday there is a band. And there is a wide range of draught beers (as well as wines.)
Best Bits - Somehow "Caves" strikes a balance between a formal (fairly English) setting with the laid back Aussie attitude - it just works.
Worst Bits - There is nothing that I don't like about it.
