As we were staying next to Fremantle Prison we decided that we would take a look - what a great tour!
The guide - the son of the last medical officer - was very entertaining and interesting.
Built in the 1850's by convicts, Fremantle remained the state's main jail up until 1993 - so really very recent. There are a number of cells that are open and they have been set-up to show how the prison standards changed over the years - the only major change being that the cells were doubled in size soon after the building was complete - because they were originally so small (2 x 1.2 meters - I think) that the inmates kept suffocating to death...
Another highlight, if that is appropriate a term, was the gallows. Seeing the set-up and being in a room where a number of men and women had been killed was a little unsettling.
Hopefully the tour convinced the kids that a life of crime is not the way to go...
Best Bits - Great tours - would highly recommend.
Worst Bits - None.
